Challenge
Our client needed to transition its workload automation environment from Aria Automation 8.18 to VMware Cloud Foundation Automation (VCF Automation), while expanding automation capabilities across its infrastructure. The initiative required deep expertise in VCF 9.1 architecture, migration planning, workflow orchestration, and integration across multiple environments.
Key challenges included migrating existing code and configurations, enabling All Apps and VM Apps frameworks, validating infrastructure-as-code (IaC) configurations, and maintaining comprehensive technical documentation to support operational readiness.
Solution
Our Senior VCFA Consultant partnered with engineering teams and the Workstream Lead Architect to drive the workload automation transition and implement expanded automation capabilities.
Key activities included:
- Migration and implementation: Supported the transition from Aria Automation 8.18 to VCF Automation, including migration of code and configurations to VM Apps and custom cross-instance VM management.
- Expanded automation: Implemented and configured VM Apps and All Apps organizations, Cloud Accounts, and associated integrations to extend automation capabilities.
- Workflow orchestration: Developed and enhanced IaaS and XaaS workflows using Aria Automation and Orchestrator, integrating VMware and third-party services.
- Architecture and IaC alignment: Collaborated with architecture and engineering teams on design decisions, manually validated configurations, and helped prioritize the IaC backlog.
- Technical documentation: Produced detailed Low-Level Design (LLD) documents, as-built documentation, and operational runbooks covering deployment, configuration, and operational procedures.
Impact
The engagement established a foundation for a more capable, standardized, and maintainable workload automation environment aligned with the organization’s VCF strategy.
Key outcomes included:
- Modernized automation platform: Advanced the transition from Aria Automation 8.18 to VCF Automation.
- Expanded automation capabilities: Enabled broader use of All Apps and VM Apps frameworks and supported more extensive workflow orchestration.
- Improved operational readiness: Documented deployment configurations, architecture decisions, and operational procedures to support ongoing management and knowledge transfer.
- Stronger architecture alignment: Improved collaboration across architecture, engineering, and IaC teams to support design consistency and backlog prioritization.
- Scalable automation foundation: Positioned the environment to support future automation enhancements and integrations across VMware and third-party services.
