Challenge

As organizations seek to modernize their monitoring and observability platforms, many face challenges migrating from legacy logging and monitoring solutions while maintaining visibility across distributed network environments. Our client required a proof of concept (POC) to evaluate a Grafana-based observability stack capable of collecting, normalizing, and visualizing log and telemetry data from multiple network sites and infrastructure devices.

The engagement required expertise in Grafana, Loki, OpenTelemetry, and log management technologies to validate data collection, ensure telemetry accuracy, and establish a scalable observability framework. Our client also needed support troubleshooting ingestion pipelines, validating dashboards, documenting configurations, and preparing operational teams for long-term adoption.

Solution

ClearBridge provided a Senior Observability Engineer to lead and support the Grafana-based observability migration proof-of-concept.

Our consultant:

  • Designed and implemented a Grafana observability architecture leveraging Grafana dashboards, Loki, and OpenTelemetry Collector technologies.
  • Deployed and configured collectors to ingest syslog data and network telemetry from routers, switches, firewalls, wireless controllers, and other network infrastructure devices.
  • Supported telemetry collection for critical operational metrics, including CPU utilization, memory consumption, uptime, interface status, bandwidth utilization, errors, discards, alarms, and overall device health.
  • Configured and validated log ingestion pipelines using Loki, LogQL, OpenTelemetry Collector, and Grafana Alloy, with additional support for Logstash-based parsing and normalization where required.
  • Developed parsing, filtering, and normalization processes to ensure consistent and actionable log data across diverse network device platforms, including Cisco environments.
  • Validated dashboards, data sources, telemetry accuracy, and visualization requirements across multiple sites participating in the proof of concept.
  • Troubleshot ingestion issues, dropped logs, parsing errors, collector health, and telemetry flow challenges to ensure reliable data collection.
  • Produced comprehensive documentation, validation reports, configuration standards, known issue logs, and operational handoff materials to support future production deployment.

Impact

The observability proof of concept provided the client with a validated framework for modern monitoring and logging operations, delivering several key outcomes:

  • Demonstrated the viability of a Grafana-based observability platform for enterprise-scale network monitoring.
  • Improved visibility into network infrastructure health through centralized log management and telemetry collection.
  • Established standardized log parsing and normalization processes across multiple device types and locations.
  • Accelerated troubleshooting and root-cause analysis through consolidated dashboards and searchable log data.
  • Identified and resolved data ingestion, pipeline, and telemetry collection issues before production deployment.
  • Reduced migration risk by validating architecture, workflows, and operational procedures in a controlled proof-of-concept environment.
  • Enabled knowledge transfer and operational readiness through detailed documentation and stakeholder handoff sessions.
  • Created a scalable foundation for future observability initiatives leveraging Grafana, Loki, OpenTelemetry, and related open-source technologies.
