ITIL 4 Direct, Plan, and Improve helps to align product and service management with modern business requirements, drive successful organizational transformation, and embed continual improvement into an organization’s behavior at every level.

Direct, Plan and Improve (DPI) is one of five ITIL 4 publications that build on the concepts introduced in ITIL Foundation and the only one of the four publications to contribute to both the ITIL 4 Managing Professional Certification and the ITIL Strategic Leader Certification.

DPI addresses the strategic side of Service Management best practices. It covers topics such as setting strategy and providing direction, conducting assessments, choosing the right measures and reporting, and establishing continual improvement throughout the organization. In an area that is vital and been lacking in Service Management best practices until now, DPI addresses Organizational Change Management.

DPI is another example of how ITIL 4 has modernized the Service Management best practices. While Service Strategy was one part of the ITIL 3 guidance and the focus of the book Service Management for IT Services, ITIL 4 takes a more direct approach to identifying the needs of strategy, not only from the concepts of a portfolio of Services, but also from a human side including leadership, culture, and behavior.

DPI also examines the concept of Value Streams in more detail. Value Streams is one of the core concepts that ITIL 4 is built on and an important growth from the concept of IT Services, the foundation of Service Management.
